A RESOLUTION

Designating the month of March 2010 as "American Red Cross

2

Month" in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, The American Red Cross fulfills a unique and vital

4

role in this Commonwealth and around the world, providing help

5

and hope in the face of emergencies and disaster, and is a true

6

reflection of the humanitarian and volunteer spirit of the

7

American people; and

8

WHEREAS, For nearly 100 years, presidents have called on the

9

American people to support the Red Cross and its humanitarian

10

mission; and

11

WHEREAS, In World War I, President Woodrow Wilson ordered the

Red Cross to raise funds to support emergency aid to the

2

military and in less than six weeks, the organization collected

3

a total of nearly $146 million, a tribute to the overwhelming

4

generosity of the American public; and

5

WHEREAS, In 1943, during World War II, President Franklin D.

6

Roosevelt started the tradition of proclaiming March as Red

7

Cross Month and designating it as a time to recognize and

8

support the valuable work of the American Red Cross by making a

9

financial contribution, donating blood, taking a lifesaving

10

class or volunteering to help the Red Cross perform its mission;

11

and

12

WHEREAS, Currently, more than 400 Red Cross workers, more

13

than 100 representing the American Red Cross, from at least 30

14

countries are in Haiti to help the thousands of local volunteers

15

with earthquake relief efforts; and

16

WHEREAS, Every day, through its network of 848 employees and

17

39,705 volunteers in more than 46 locations across this

18

Commonwealth, the American Red Cross is there to lend a helping

19

hand whenever disaster strikes; and

20

WHEREAS, The Red Cross connects military families with their

21

loved ones in service and provides training in CPR, aquatics

22

safety and first aid, spreading humanitarian aid and goodwill to

23

people around the world; and

24

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania depends on the American Red Cross and,

25

because it is not a government agency, the Red Cross depends on

26

support from the public to continue its humanitarian work,

27

especially important in these challenging economic times;

28

therefore be it

29

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the

30

month of March 2010 as "American Red Cross Month" in

Pennsylvania; and be it further

2

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commend the

3

American Red Cross and all of its employees and volunteers for

4

their service and dedication to the communities and residents of

5

this Commonwealth.
