        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           JUNE 13, 2000

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating November 19, 2000, as "Tolerance and Understanding
     2     Day" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Tolerance Unlimited in Pennsylvania is a charitable
     4  organization whose principal goal is the nonsectarian promotion
     5  of a resurgence of the spirit of tolerance and understanding;
     6  and
     7     WHEREAS, The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania can trace its
     8  colonial roots to an historic effort to foster William Penn's
     9  goals of religious tolerance and freedom and became an example
    10  to other colonies and a beacon of understanding to a newly-
    11  formed nation.
    12     WHEREAS, Tolerance Unlimited in Pennsylvania is awarding the
    13  first "Tolerance and Understanding" award on November 19, 2000;
    14  and
    15     WHEREAS, November 19 has been chosen as the date for the


     1  tolerance and understanding award presentation because it is the
     2  date on which Abraham Lincoln delivered his historic Gettysburg
     3  Address in 1863 at Gettysburg; therefore be it
     4     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate
     5  November 19, 2000, as "Tolerance and Understanding Day" in
     6  Pennsylvania.
