HOUSE RESOLUTION

No. 506 Session of 2003


        INTRODUCED BY SOLOBAY, BOYD, CAPPELLI, CORRIGAN, CRAHALLA, CRUZ,
           DENLINGER, HENNESSEY, HERSHEY, PALLONE, READSHAW, TANGRETTI
           AND TRUE, DECEMBER 8, 2003

        REFERRED TO COMMITTEE ON CHILDREN AND YOUTH, DECEMBER 8, 2003

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Condemning the marketing practices of Abercrombie & Fitch
     2     Stores, Inc.

     3     WHEREAS, Abercrombie & Fitch Stores, Inc., founded in 1892,
     4  is one of the world's most popular and successful manufacturers
     5  of clothing; and
     6     WHEREAS, The publications of Abercrombie & Fitch Stores,
     7  Inc., including Abercrombie & Fitch catalogs and Abercrombie &
     8  Fitch Quarterly, have in recent years featured scantily clad
     9  models ostensibly selling clothing to children and adolescents;
    10  and
    11     WHEREAS, Children and adolescents are especially susceptible
    12  to peer pressure and sexually oriented marketing; and
    13     WHEREAS, Most of these models are young people, some
    14  appearing to be under 18 years of age; and
    15     WHEREAS, Abercrombie & Fitch Stores, Inc., acknowledges that
    16  the Abercrombie & Fitch Quarterly is inappropriate for children
    17  and adolescents by requiring proof of age for its purchase; and


     1     WHEREAS, Abercrombie & Fitch Stores, Inc., has marketed
     2  sexually suggestive clothing, including thong underwear with
     3  such phrases as "Eye Candy" and "Wink Wink," in children's
     4  sizes, thus suggesting that the articles are to be worn by
     5  children; and
     6     WHEREAS, Many of the societal problems the Commonwealth of
     7  Pennsylvania addresses, including teen pregnancy and sexually
     8  transmitted diseases, stem from promiscuous sexual activity;
     9  therefore be it
    10     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the
    11  Commonwealth of Pennsylvania recognize the harm of these
    12  marketing practices to the moral fabric and fiscal stability of
    13  the residents of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania; and be it
    14  further
    15     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives condemn the
    16  marketing practices of Abercrombie & Fitch Stores, Inc., and
    17  implore them to develop more responsible advertising campaigns.
