INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, APRIL 28, 1998
A RESOLUTION 1 Designating May 14, 1998, as "Israel Independence Day" in 2 Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, The State of Israel was established in 1948 as a 4 safe haven for Jews who survived the horrors of the Holocaust; 5 and 6 WHEREAS, The State of Israel was founded and still exists as 7 the Mideast's only Western-style democracy; and 8 WHEREAS, The State of Israel began its existence by extending 9 the olive branch to all neighboring states and, over the course 10 of 50 years, has achieved peace with Egypt and Jordan; and
1 WHEREAS, The State of Israel is resolutely moving towards the 2 goal of a peaceful coexistence with the Palestine Liberation 3 Organization and has worked with the Palestinians on numerous 4 projects which benefit both peoples; and 5 WHEREAS, A strong economy nurtures peace, and businesspersons 6 throughout this Commonwealth can help sustain Israel through 7 investment, tourism and trade opportunities; and 8 WHEREAS, There is a special friendship between the 9 governments and peoples of our two great nations, and therefore 10 we call upon the Clinton administration and the Congress of the 11 United States to continue their support of and involvement in 12 the peace process; and 13 WHEREAS, Israel's cultural vitality, rich history, political, 14 economic and social ties to the United States are a continuous 15 source of pride to Pennsylvania's Jewish community; therefore be 16 it 17 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives offer 18 congratulations to the State of Israel on the 50th anniversary 19 of its independence and the establishment of its democratic 20 government and designate May 14, 1998, as "Israel Independence 21 Day" in Pennsylvania.
