        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MARCH 12, 1998

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating April 1998 as "Pennsylvania Organ and Tissue Donor
     2     Awareness Month."

     3     WHEREAS, Organ and tissue transplantation has been recognized
     4  as a corrective and lifesaving medical procedure; and
     5     WHEREAS, This Commonwealth has 14 transplant centers and is
     6  recognized as a world leader in organ and tissue
     7  transplantation; and
     8     WHEREAS, It is estimated that over 55,000 people are waiting
     9  for organ transplants in the United States; and


     1     WHEREAS, Approximately ten people die per day in the United
     2  States awaiting an organ transplant; and
     3     WHEREAS, It is estimated that over 2,000 people are waiting
     4  for cornea transplants in the United States; and
     5     WHEREAS, The Commonwealth by law enables citizens to donate
     6  their organs and tissues through written statements and also
     7  allows relatives to consent to the donation of organs and
     8  tissues of a deceased family member; and
     9     WHEREAS, A vital component of the continuation and
    10  advancement of organ transplantation is the retrieval of donor
    11  organs and tissues; and
    12     WHEREAS, Improved surgical techniques and drugs to offset
    13  rejection of organs have resulted in a high success rate; and
    14     WHEREAS, Those in need of transplants far exceed the number
    15  of organs and amount of tissue available; therefore be it
    16     RESOLVED, That the month of April 1998 be designated as
    17  "Pennsylvania Organ and Tissue Donor Awareness Month"; and be it
    18  further
    19     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives encourage all
    20  Pennsylvanians to carry donor cards and discuss this decision
    21  with family members and friends.
