A RESOLUTION
Designating the week of April 8 through 14, 2024, as "Local
Government Week" and April 10, 2024, as "Local Government
Day" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Local government in Pennsylvania is a vibrant
collage of more than 4,600 individual units, including 67
counties, 56 cities, 93 townships of the first class, more than
1,400 townships of the second class, more than 950 boroughs, one
incorporated town, 500 school districts and more than 1,500
municipal authorities; and
WHEREAS, Nearly 166,000 employees work on behalf of
municipalities to provide services and facilities for almost 13
million residents of this Commonwealth, ranging from the special
purpose functions of counties, school districts and municipal
authorities in the areas of judicial administration, social
welfare, education and provision of water and sewer services to
the more general purpose functions of cities, townships,

boroughs and towns such as maintenance of roads and streets,
police and fire protection and enforcement of ordinances and
land-use controls; and
WHEREAS, Local government comprises thousands of hardworking
citizen officials, many of whom work without reward, including
more than 1,700 volunteer firefighters; and
WHEREAS, Local government also relies on thousands of
hardworking staff members who carry out the directives of local
elected officials and are supported by thousands of dedicated
volunteers who serve on local boards and commissions; and
WHEREAS, Residents of this Commonwealth rely upon the
dedication of their local officials in meeting many of the
residents' most fundamental needs in virtually all facets of
daily living; and
WHEREAS, Local government is the keystone of our democracy
and the foundation of our political system; and
WHEREAS, "Local Government Week" and "Local Government Day"
focus attention on the need for a strong, independent and
responsive local government in this Commonwealth and recognize
the valuable contributions made by residents serving their
communities; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
week of April 8 through 14, 2024, as "Local Government Week" and
April 10, 2024, as "Local Government Day" in Pennsylvania; and
be it further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commend and thank
local government officials for their labor and great
contributions to this Commonwealth as the unsung heroes of
government.
