        ADOPTED, APRIL 24, 1990

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Urging the Colgate-Palmolive Company to change the name and logo
     2     of "Darkie" toothpaste.

     3     WHEREAS, The Colgate-Palmolive Company distributes a widely-
     4  sold brand of toothpaste in Asia under the name of "Darkie" and
     5  with a logo depicting a black minstrel figure in a top hat and
     6  bow tie; and
     7     WHEREAS, This repugnant name and logo is blatantly racist and
     8  deeply offensive to African-Americans; and
     9     WHEREAS, Shareholders in the Colgate-Palmolive Company have
    10  attempted, unsuccessfully, to have their company change this
    11  name and logo; and
    12     WHEREAS, This situation has been brought to the attention of
    13  the American public through newspaper articles, including an
    14  article in the widely-circulated "Wall Street Journal";
    15  therefore be it
    16     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives strongly urge the
    17  Colgate-Palmolive Company to change the racist name and logo of
    18  its "Darkie" toothpaste as soon as possible; and be it further

     1     RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
     2  the corporate headquarters of the Colgate-Palmolive Company in
     3  New York.
