        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           JUNE 4, 2003

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Congratulating Salisbury Township, Lehigh County, on the
     2     celebration of its 250th anniversary in 2003.

     3     WHEREAS, On March 20, 1753, a number of persons living in the
     4  territory along the Lehigh River above Bethlehem submitted a
     5  petition to the Court of Quarter Sessions of Northampton County
     6  asking that a new township be established; and
     7     WHEREAS, On June 9, 1753, the Court of Easton approved the
     8  request and the Township of Salisbury was established; and
     9     WHEREAS, The Township of Salisbury was established the same
    10  year the Liberty Bell was hung in the State House steeple in
    11  Philadelphia; and
    12     WHEREAS, A disagreement occasionally erupted over the correct
    13  name of the township, which was called Salsberg, Saltzburg,


     1  Salsburg, Salisburg and Salisbury, its official present name;
     2  and
     3     WHEREAS, Salisbury was under the rule of King George, and the
     4  recording clerk was English; and
     5     WHEREAS, Fountain Hill, Emmaus from Keystone Street eastward
     6  and all of Allentown south of the Little Lehigh Creek were once
     7  part of Salisbury; and
     8     WHEREAS, Salisbury was home to Lenni Lenape or Delaware
     9  Indians; and
    10     WHEREAS, Salisbury is believed to be a part of the "Walking
    11  Purchase" of 1737; and
    12     WHEREAS, Solomon Jennings, one of the three walkers in the
    13  "Walking Purchase," was the first official settler in Salisbury;
    14  and
    15     WHEREAS, The New Jerusalem Union Church-Eastern Salisbury was
    16  erected as a house of worship in 1759; and
    17     WHEREAS, Salisbury's first store was opened in 1790 by James
    18  Gill; and
    19     WHEREAS, After 250 years, the Township of Salisbury offers a
    20  blend of city and country life with clean air and water, choice
    21  educational facilities and many recreational opportunities and
    22  is an ideal place to live and work; therefore be it
    23     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives offer
    24  congratulations to Salisbury Township, Lehigh County, on its
    25  historic 250th anniversary and extend profound best wishes for
    26  many more joyous celebrations in the years to come; and be it
    27  further
    28     RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
    29  Salisbury Township.
