A RESOLUTION 1 Declaring October 25 through 31, 1999, as "Massage Therapy Week" 2 in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Massage therapy is a profession dealing with the 4 application of structured touch to the human body; and 5 WHEREAS, The practice of massage therapy dates back 3,000 6 years to China, and massage therapy was practiced in ancient 7 Egypt; and 8 WHEREAS, Hippocrates, the Greek physician known as the father 9 of modern medicine, was a 4th century B.C. advocate of massage; 10 and 11 WHEREAS, Each year 25 million Americans make 60 million 12 visits to 85,000 practitioners; and 13 WHEREAS, Massage therapy is primarily used to relax tension, 14 reduce heart rate, lower blood pressure, boost immune function 15 and improve circulation; and 16 WHEREAS, Studies have shown massage therapy to have positive 17 effects on health conditions such as colic, hyperactivity,
1 diabetes and migraines; and 2 WHEREAS, There are approximately 2,000 practitioners of 3 massage therapy in this Commonwealth, nearly half of whom are 4 members of the American Massage Therapists Association; and 5 WHEREAS, It is appropriate to acknowledge massage therapy 6 among the health care choices available to citizens of this 7 Commonwealth; therefore be it 8 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives declare October 9 25 through 31, 1999, as "Massage Therapy Week" in Pennsylvania.
