A RESOLUTION 1 Honoring the City of Pittsburgh for being rated America's Most 2 Livable City for 2007 by the Places Rated Almanac. 3 WHEREAS, Fort Duquesne was built in 1754, at the beginning of 4 the French and Indian War, on the site that would become 5 Pittsburgh; and 6 WHEREAS, In 1759 the British constructed Fort Pitt, named for 7 British Secretary of State William Pitt, on the site; and 8 WHEREAS, The original settlement was called Pittsborough; and 9 WHEREAS, William Penn's descendents purchased western lands, 10 including Pittsburgh's present site, from the Six Nations in 11 1768; and 12 WHEREAS, The land between the Allegheny and Monongahela
1 Rivers was formally surveyed in 1769 and was called the Manor of 2 Pittsburgh; and 3 WHEREAS, On April 22, 1794, the General Assembly gave 4 Pittsburgh its official name; and 5 WHEREAS, Steel production in the City of Pittsburgh began in 6 1875; and 7 WHEREAS, The United States Steel Corporation was formed in 8 1901; and 9 WHEREAS, One-third to one-half of the nation's steel was 10 produced in the City of Pittsburgh by 1911; and 11 WHEREAS, Ninety-five million tons of steel were produced in 12 the City of Pittsburgh to support America's efforts during World 13 War II; and 14 WHEREAS, Through clean air initiatives, civic revitalization 15 and neighborhood development, the City of Pittsburgh experienced 16 a renaissance in the mid-20th century; and 17 WHEREAS, The City of Pittsburgh is a multicultural hub, with 18 rich ethnic and religious diversities; and 19 WHEREAS, The City of Pittsburgh has diversified its economy, 20 shifting from an industrial economy to an economy based on 21 technology, health care, education, finance and tourism; and 22 WHEREAS, As the only American city to finish in the Places 23 Rated Almanac's top 20 in the almanac's 25-year history, the 24 City of Pittsburgh is widely recognized as a Livable City for 25 its residents; and 26 WHEREAS, The City of Pittsburgh deserves recognition for its 27 continuing tradition of thriving commerce, vibrant civic life 28 and welcoming community; therefore be it 29 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the City of 30 Pittsburgh for being rated America's Most Livable City for 2007 20070H0265R1485 - 2 -
