                               A JOINT RESOLUTION

     1  Proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the Commonwealth
     2     of Pennsylvania, reducing the size of the General Assembly.

     3     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     4  hereby resolves as follows:
     5     Section 1.  The following amendment to the Constitution of
     6  Pennsylvania is proposed in accordance with Article XI:
     7     That section 16 of Article II be amended to read:
     8  § 16.  Legislative districts.
     9     The Commonwealth shall be divided into 50 senatorial and 203
    10  representative districts[, which] until the reapportionment
    11  following the Federal Decennial Census for the year 2000 at
    12  which time the Commonwealth shall be divided into 40 senatorial
    13  and 125 representative districts. Each district shall be
    14  composed of compact and contiguous territory as nearly equal in
    15  population as practicable. Each senatorial district shall elect
    16  one Senator, and each representative district one


     1  Representative. Unless absolutely necessary no county, city,
     2  incorporated town, borough, township or ward shall be divided in
     3  forming either a senatorial or representative district.
