In the House of Representatives, May 18,1976 1 WHEREAS, The late Benjamin Franklin, of Philadelphia, is 2 widely regarded throughout the world as "the most famous 3 American"; and 4 WHEREAS, For most of his public life he was associated with 5 this General Assembly, as Clerk, Assemblyman, Speaker and its 6 representative in England; and 7 WHEREAS, He was appointed by this General Assembly to the 8 Second Continental Congress and named to a committee instructed 9 to draft a Declaration of Independence; and 10 WHEREAS, He was a signatory to the said Declaration of 11 Independence in 1776 when he was seventy years of age; and 12 WHEREAS, Eleven years later, after representing the United 13 States in France and serving as President of Pennsylvania, he 14 was chosen as a member of the Pennsylvania delegation to the 15 Constitutional Convention in 1787, and signed the proposed 16 Constitution of the United States in his eighty-first year; and 17 WHEREAS, He made numerous contributions in many fields which 18 benefited his fellowmen, and has endeared himself to posterity
1 for his warmth, wit and common sense; therefore be it 2 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives (the Senate 3 concurring) do, on the occasion of the Bicentennial of American 4 Independence, and in the 294th year of the General Assembly, 5 record its pride in its most illustrious member, and commends 6 Ben Franklin to all Pennsylvanians as an example that at every 7 stage of one's life a person can do something to make his State 8 and Nation better for the generations yet to come; and be it 9 further 10 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be presented to the 11 Franklin Institute, which is the Benjamin Franklin National 12 Memorial.
