        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MAY 8, 2001

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Sarah Heinz House for
     2     its commitment to the youth and neighborhood of Pittsburgh's
     3     Northside.

     4     WHEREAS, In 1901 Howard C. Heinz started a boys and girls
     5  club known as the Covode House in memory of Jacob Covode of
     6  Sharpsburg to provide a center for boys and girls from diverse
     7  cultural, ethnic, religious and economic backgrounds to engage
     8  in recreational activities; and
     9     WHEREAS, In 1913 Henry Heinz, son of Howard C. Heinz, built
    10  the Sarah Heinz House as a recreation center dedicated to youth,
    11  recreation, character and service; and
    12     WHEREAS, In 1915 the Sarah Heinz Hosue was dedicated as a
    13  memorial to Sarah Young Heinz, beloved wife of Henry Heinz; and


     1     WHEREAS, Covode House and Sarah Heinz House directors Lloyd
     2  B. Wright, John J. Davey, Arthur G. Jeffrey and Dorsey H.
     3  Stackhouse served to build and maintain the Sarah Heinz House as
     4  a pillar of the community, providing strength and security to
     5  the youth and neighborhood; and
     6     WHEREAS, The Sarah Heinz House instills character and good
     7  citizenship in youth through its physical and recreational
     8  activities, including gymnastics, swimming, crafts, team sports,
     9  games, reading and the Annual Campaign for Others; and
    10     WHEREAS, The Sarah Heinz House stands as a tribute to the
    11  accomplishments of youth and the dedication of the Heinz family
    12  to the ideals of youth, recreation, character and service,
    13  enabling young people to enjoy wholesome, social and
    14  recreational opportunities and to utilize their leisure time and
    15  energy pleasantly and profitably; therefore be it
    16     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate the
    17  100th anniversary of the Sarah Heinz House for its commitment to
    18  the youth and neighborhood of Pittsburgh's Northside.
