A RESOLUTION 1 Directing the Education Committee to investigate the causes of 2 firearm violence in our schools. 3 WHEREAS, The United States Justice Department estimates that 4 100,000 children take guns to school every day and that 160,000 5 more stay home because of fear; and 6 WHEREAS, The Center to Prevent Handgun Violence estimates 7 that 18% of school gun incidents are related to drugs or gangs, 8 15% involve longstanding disagreements and 10% result from 9 fights over personal property; and 10 WHEREAS, This Commonwealth is not immune to this national 11 problem--recently, a Montgomery County youth was slain in a gun- 12 related incident; therefore be it 13 RESOLVED, That the Education Committee undertake an 14 investigation of the causes and extent of the school violence 15 problem in this Commonwealth; and be it further 16 RESOLVED, That the committee may hold hearings, take
1 testimony and make its investigations at such places as it deems 2 necessary in this Commonwealth. Each member of the committee 3 shall have power to administer oaths and affirmations to 4 witnesses appearing before the committee; and be it further 5 RESOLVED, That the committee shall make a report of its 6 findings and of any recommendations for possible remedies to 7 this urgent problem within six months of the passage of this 8 resolution.
