        REFERRED TO COMMITTEE ON RULES, JUNE 6, 1989

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Directing the Consumer Affairs Committee to investigate and
     2     recommend ways to attract and retain volunteer fire,
     3     ambulance and rescue personnel and to foster cooperation from
     4     Pennsylvania businesses to support volunteer services.

     5     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania volunteer fire, ambulance and rescue
     6  services play important and often critical roles in the welfare
     7  and public safety of Commonwealth citizens; and
     8     WHEREAS, Dedicated personnel, committed to their communities
     9  and to the valuable work that they perform, often engage in
    10  risks far beyond any compensation available to them; and
    11     WHEREAS, The activities of volunteer services have saved
    12  multimillions of tax dollars for Commonwealth citizens over many
    13  years, and the uncompensated services they perform in areas
    14  unstaffed with paid employees often constitute the only


     1  emergency response systems available for the community; and
     2     WHEREAS, It is in the interest of all Pennsylvania
     3  communities to support the work of Pennsylvania volunteer fire,
     4  ambulance and rescue services; therefore be it
     5     RESOLVED, That the House Consumer Affairs Committee
     6  investigate and recommend ways to:
     7         (1)  attract and retain volunteer fire, ambulance and
     8     rescue personnel; and
     9         (2)  foster greater cooperation and support from
    10     Pennsylvania businesses in assisting the volunteer companies
    11     in performing their services;
    12  and be it further
    13     RESOLVED, That the committee report its findings and
    14  recommendations to the House of Representatives not later than
    15  February 1, 1990.
