        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           FEBRUARY 16, 2005

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating April 4, 2005, as "Thaddeus Stevens Day" in
     2     Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Thaddeus Stevens, a prominent figure in the 19th
     4  century history of Pennsylvania and the United States, was born
     5  in Vermont on April 4, 1792; and
     6     WHEREAS, Stevens lived most of his life in Pennsylvania,
     7  teaching, practicing law and serving in the Pennsylvania
     8  Legislature from 1833 to 1841 and representing Pennsylvanians in
     9  Congress from 1849 to 1853 and again from 1858 until his death
    10  in 1868; and
    11     WHEREAS, Stevens notably fought for the preservation of


     1  public education in Pennsylvania, for emancipation of the
     2  slaves, for passage of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution of
     3  the United States and for Reconstruction of the South after the
     4  Civil War; and
     5     WHEREAS, Stevens directed that, upon his death, he be buried
     6  in an integrated cemetery in the City of Lancaster with this
     7  self-composed epitaph on his grave marker: "I have chosen this
     8  that I might illustrate in my death the principles which I
     9  advocated through a long life, Equality of Man before his
    10  Creator"; and
    11     WHEREAS, Stevens left a generous bequest upon his death on
    12  August 11, 1868, to establish a school for the relief and refuge
    13  of homeless, indigent orphans; and
    14     WHEREAS, This bequest evolved to form the Thaddeus Stevens
    15  College of Technology, founded to provide solid industrial
    16  education to all Pennsylvania citizens regardless of race or
    17  color and is a living monument to the life of Thaddeus Stevens;
    18  and
    19     WHEREAS, During 2005, the Thaddeus Stevens College of
    20  Technology is celebrating the 100th anniversary of its founding;
    21  therefore be it
    22     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate the
    23  anniversary of the birth of this remarkable man and recognize
    24  the important contributions of the Thaddeus Stevens College of
    25  Technology on the occasion of its 100th anniversary by
    26  designating April 4, 2005, as "Thaddeus Stevens Day" in
    27  Pennsylvania.
