        REFERRED TO COMMITTEE ON RULES, APRIL 8, 1987

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Saluting the League of Women Voters on the 67th anniversary of
     2     its founding.

     3     WHEREAS, The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political
     4  organization, encourages the informed and active participation
     5  of citizens in government and influences public policy through
     6  education and advocacy; and
     7     WHEREAS, Founded in 1920 at the culmination of a 72-year
     8  struggle to gain women's suffrage, the League's first charge was
     9  to educate 20 million women on how best to exercise their new
    10  political rights and responsibilities; and
    11     WHEREAS, Though its programs and priorities have changed over
    12  the years, the League has remained true to its basic purposes,
    13  those being, to establish positions on public policy through
    14  member participation and agreement; to take concerted actions

     1  that secure public policies consistent with League positions; to
     2  enhance citizen participation in Federal, state and local
     3  government decisions; and to increase citizen participation in
     4  the election process; and
     5     WHEREAS, The League has some 200,000 members and supporters
     6  nationwide, and is organized in all 50 states plus the District
     7  of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands; and
     8     WHEREAS, The League of Women Voters is deserving of
     9  recognition for its untiring efforts throughout the years in the
    10  promotion of good government; therefore be it
    11     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the
    12  Commonwealth of Pennsylvania salute the League of Women Voters
    13  on the 67th anniversary of its founding, and commend this
    14  outstanding organization for its leadership in advocacy of the
    15  democratic process and education of the public in matters of
    16  importance to our nation; and be it further
    17     RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to
    18  the President of the National League of Women Voters and to the
    19  President of the Pennsylvania League of Women Voters.
