A RESOLUTION

Memorializing the Congress of the United States to take action

2

to safeguard the health of families who are eligible for food

3

stamps by changing the way the Food Stamps Program is

4

regulated.

WHEREAS, The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program

6

(SNAP), formerly known as the Food Stamps Program, is

7

administered in Pennsylvania by the Department of Public Welfare

8

with guidelines from the United States Department of Agriculture

9

(USDA); and

10

WHEREAS, The program is designed to supply people of low

11

income with adequate resources to feed their families each

12

month; and

13

WHEREAS, There are minimal limits as to what types of food

14

can be purchased through SNAP; and

15

WHEREAS, The levels of obesity, particularly in children, is

16

rising in this Commonwealth and nationwide; and

17

WHEREAS, People may need education to make healthier and more

18

cost-effective decisions about purchasing food; and

WHEREAS, The Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program

2

contains far more stringent guidelines to limit foods to only

3

those that are determined to be healthful for children; and

4

WHEREAS, WIC is also regulated by the USDA; therefore be it

5

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of Pennsylvania

6

memorialize the Congress of the United States to take action to

7

safeguard the health of families who are eligible for food

8

stamps by changing the way the Food Stamps Program is regulated

9

so that it more closely tracks with the WIC Program in terms of

10

healthy choices for people; and be it further

11

RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to

12

all members of Congress from Pennsylvania to make them aware of

13

our concern for the health of all Pennsylvanians.
