        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           FEBRUARY 5, 2001

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating March 4 through 10, 2001 as "Space, Satellite and
     2     Technology Week" in Pennsylvania in recognition of the
     3     educational activities planned to make educators aware of the
     4     classroom benefits gained from space exploration and
     5     satellite technology.

     6     WHEREAS, A large percentage of the student population of our
     7  country is deficient in mathematics, science and technology
     8  opportunities; and
     9     WHEREAS, The discoveries and knowledge gained from space
    10  exploration and satellite technology development are valuable
    11  education tools not adequately utilized in the classrooms; and
    12     WHEREAS, The increasing application of space technology to
    13  everyday life and industry requires an adequate work force; and

     1     WHEREAS, Students are more receptive to learning that
     2  incorporates hands-on activities and real-life situations; and
     3     WHEREAS, Exemplary programs such as West Chester University's
     4  Educational Center for Earth Observation Systems need to be
     5  replicated across the Commonwealth; and
     6     WHEREAS, The following are examples of programs in this
     7  Commonwealth that are being developed to better educate
     8  students, teachers and parents:
     9         (1)  West Chester University offers a special SOAR
    10     professional development teacher-training workshop on
    11     satellite tracking, image processing and remote sensing and
    12     how the latest technologies are utilized to meet Pennsylvania
    13     standards from March 7 through 9, 2001.
    14         (2)  West Chester University hosts the National Teaching,
    15     Technology and Satellites in the Classroom Conference
    16     (Satellites and Education Conference) from March 7 through 9,
    17     2000.
    18         (3)  The Satellite Educators Association holds its annual
    19     meeting on March 8, 2001.
    20         (4)  Pennsylvania teachers involved with Global Learning
    21     and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) are
    22     meeting and discussing the work their students are doing with
    23     scientists at the sixth annual GLOBE breakfast;
    24  therefore be it
    25     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate March 4
    26  through 10, 2001, as "Space, Satellite and Technology Week" in
    27  Pennsylvania in recognition of many educational activities
    28  planned in this Commonwealth to celebrate our commitments to
    29  space exploration and excellence in education.
