HOUSE RESOLUTION

No. 32 Session of 1981


        INTRODUCED BY LESCOVITZ, DeMEDIO, SWEET AND FISCHER,
           MARCH 17, 1981

        REFERRED TO COMMITTEE ON RULES, MARCH 17, 1981

                         In the House of Representatives, March 17, 1981

     1     WHEREAS, On March 28, 1781, Washington County was established
     2  by the Pennsylvania General Assembly; and
     3     WHEREAS, Washington County was created in the midst of the
     4  Revolution and carved out of land held by hostile indians and
     5  bandits; and
     6     WHEREAS, Washington County is the mother county of Allegheny,
     7  Greene and Beaver counties; and
     8     WHEREAS, In 1783 a log courthouse was built in the center of
     9  a town called Basset, now called Washington, the county seat;
    10  and
    11     WHEREAS, After only a decade of existence the farmers and
    12  settlers of the region led the fight against an excise tax on
    13  whiskey, later to be known as the Whiskey Rebellion; and
    14     WHEREAS, On March 28, 1981, Washington County will celebrate
    15  its Bicentennial and will embark upon its third century;
    16  therefore be it
    17     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the

     1  Commonwealth of Pennsylvania hereby extends its congratulations
     2  and best wishes to the citizens of Washington County upon the
     3  occasion of the Washington County Bicentennial; and be it
     4  further
     5     RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be immediately
     6  transmitted to the county commissioners of Washington County.
