Subject: | Heart and Lung Act Expansion |
I plan to reintroduce Senate Bill 503, which would expand the list of law enforcement entities protected under the Enforcement Officer Disability Benefits Law, commonly known as The Heart and Lung Act. Among those to be included are DCNR Rangers and State Park Officers employed by DCNR, members of Fort Indiantown Gap Police, commissioned officers within the Department of Corrections, Bureau of Investigations and Intelligence, and officers within the Office of State Inspector General. The bill also provides an opt-in for counties for probation officers, corrections officers and jail guards, as well as for universities that wish to extend the benefit to their campus police officers. It is important to note that the duties of all these individuals require them to serve the public and place themselves in harm’s way, and as such, they deserve the same protections already afforded to other law enforcement officers. This legislation garnered unanimous support in the Senate last session and had the backing of the Governor’s administration, with whom we worked to craft agreed-to language. It is my intention to champion this as one of my top legislative priorities for the new session, and I hope you will join me. Previous co-sponsors of SB 503 were: ARGALL, AUMENT, BAKER, BARTOLOTTA, BREWSTER, BROOKS, BROWNE, COMITTA, MARTIN, MASTRIANO, MENSCH, MUTH, PITTMAN, SCAVELLO, STEFANO, TARTAGLIONE, J. WARD, YAW, and YUDICHAK. |
