| Subject: | Police Week and Police Officers’ Memorial Day |
| I intend to introduce a resolution recognizing the week of May 15 through May 21 as “National Police Week” and designate May 9 as “Police Officers’ Memorial Day” in Pennsylvania. On May 9th the annual Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Pennsylvania State Lodge Police Memorial Ceremony will be held to honor 35 brave law enforcement officers who died in the line-of-duty in the last several years. Of those, we lost 13 in 2020 and 19 in 2021. Attached is a list of those officers. I encourage you to not only note whether they were your constituent but to take a moment to reflect on each officer’s sacrifice and the family they left behind. It is unfortunate that we have to say goodbye to even one fallen officer, and even worse as we continue to see an increase in violence against law enforcement, as evidenced in recent comments from FBI Director Christopher Wray. According to Wray, police officer murders increased 59% in 2021 with a total of 73 officers murdered across the country last year. Additionally, the National FOP has indicated that shootings of police officers rose 43% in the first three months of 2022, and just in that first quarter of the year, 101 police officers have been shot. These grim stats should serve as a reminder that the brave men and women, who are the most selfless public servants this country has ever seen, don their uniform and strap on their gun every day while facing the realization that this could be their last. Please, in honor of these fine men and women who answer the call to serve and protect, join me in memorializing our Pennsylvania law enforcement officers, whose End of Watch came entirely too soon. |
