Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2021 - 2022 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 15, 2022 02:27 PM
From: Senator Devlin J. Robinson and Sen. Patrick J. Stefano
To: All Senate members
Subject: “Month of the Military Child” and “Purple Up! For Military Kids Day”

In the near future, we plan to introduce a resolution designating the month of April, 2022 as the “Month of the Military Child” and Friday, April 15, 2022 as “Purple Up! for Military Kids Day” in Pennsylvania.

In the United States military culture, there is an emphasis on the “total force” that holds troops and their families as more than the sum of their parts. This concept embraces families as they are the lifeline between military service and individual officers. Established by former Secretary of Defense Casper Weinberger in 1986, the designation of the Month of the Military Child is a way to call attention to the special challenges faced by children who have one or both parents in the military.

More than two million U.S. children have parents serving in the military. Of these, over 32,000 are Commonwealth children with a parent currently in the National Guard, Reserves, or active military. Eighty percent of children in military families are in kindergarten through grade 12 and attend public schools. The adjustments military children must make with frequent moves, parental deployments, an inconsistent network of supportive adults, and reintegration with every change, requires strength and courage.

In recognition of military children and to show appreciation for the many sacrifices they make, our resolution will also designate April 15, 2022 as “Purple Up! for Military Kids Day” in Pennsylvania. On this day, individuals are encouraged to wear purple (the color purple symbolizes all branches of the armed forces) in support of military families.

Please join us in supporting our military families and don’t forget to “Purple Up!” on April 15. Thank you in advance for considering co-sponsorship. Please contact Allie Dutrey of Sen. Robinson’s office, or Nate Silcox of Sen. Stefano’s office with any questions.
