| Subject: | Continuing Education Hours for Cosmetology Professionals |
| In the near future, I will introduce legislation that would provide Continuing Education (CE) hours for professionals licensed under the Pennsylvania Board of Cosmetology. Approximately half of the states in our country currently require CE hours for cosmetology professionals. Pennsylvania does not require CE hours for this occupation even though many of the other occupational licensure boards under the Pennsylvania Department of State do require CE hours for licensure. I have been contacted by several salons and spas in my senatorial district requesting CE for cosmetology professionals. They believe this is essential to help advance the professionalism of the industry and to assist with consumer safety and protection. My proposal will take a modest approach to provide CE requirements for this occupation. It will provide for a minimal number of education hours but without making the hours too burdensome for professionals or the Board of Cosmetology. Specifically, this legislation will require ten hours of CE per biannual license renewal (every two years). Eight of the hours shall be in professional skills and techniques, one hour in health and sanitation, and one hour in legal and ethics. CE providers would be approved by the State Board of Cosmetology, and licensees would simply submit the hours with their renewal applications. Please join me in support of this effort by cosponsoring my proposal to ensure these professionals are trained in the most up-to-date standards for the benefit of consumers. |
