Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2021 - 2022 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: April 26, 2021 11:55 AM
From: Senator Kristin Phillips-Hill
To: All Senate members
Subject: Designating the Month of April 2021 as Donate Life Month in Pennsylvania

In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution marking April 2021 as Donate Life month in Pennsylvania.

Organ and tissue transplantation has been recognized as a corrective and lifesaving medical procedure and each person who donates organs, eyes, and tissues can potentially save or enhance more than 75 lives and take 8 people off the organ transplant waiting list. It is estimated that more than 107,000 people are awaiting lifesaving organ transplants in the United states and nearly 7,000 of them are right here in Pennsylvania.

In 2020, approximately 12,000 individuals in the United States and 687 individuals and families in this Commonwealth, elected to give their organs through donation after their death.

Pennsylvania is a national and international leader in the field of donation and transplantation and boasts 18 transplant centers throughout the state, however, the number of people in need of transplants far exceeds the number of organs and the amount of tissue that is available. The growing demand for donated organs and tissues for transplantations represents a public health issue and we must continue to raise awareness and recognize the heroism of those who have donated and those who are still waiting.

Please join me in cosponsoring this important resolution.
