Subject: | Resolution Designating June 12, 2021 as Women Veterans Day in Pennsylvania |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution designating June 12, 2021 as “Women Veterans Day” in Pennsylvania. The purpose of this resolution is to address the disparities in care, recognition and benefits that our women veterans receive. This resolution also highlights the growing presence of women in the Armed Forces and Pennsylvania National Guard. Furthermore, and most importantly, this resolution pays respect and special recognition to women veterans for their dutiful military service. The symbolism behind June 12th is the anniversary of President Harry Truman signing the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act, the law which enabled women to serve as permanent, regular members of the United States armed forces. Since 2008, eleven states have recognized Women Veterans Day, including our neighboring states of New Jersey, New York and Ohio. It is time that Pennsylvania does the same. I invite you to co-sponsor this resolution to honor and recognize the nearly 60,000 female veterans in our Commonwealth. |
