Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2021 - 2022 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: April 14, 2021 06:49 PM
From: Senator Amanda M. Cappelletti and Sen. Vincent J. Hughes
To: All Senate members
Subject: Resolution Designating April 22, 2021 as "Earth Day"

On April 22nd we celebrate the Earth by focusing our efforts on protecting the natural resources it provides to us. This year’s theme, according to the Earth Day Network, is dedicated to “Restore Our Earth.” It is important, now more than ever, to help clean up trash, plant trees, and keep our streams and rivers in the most pristine conditions possible.

Earth Day is celebrated around the globe and recognized in 192 countries. Pennsylvania should be a leader who raises awareness of the environment and increases conservation-related educational opportunities. Therefore, we will be introducing a resolution to designate April 22, 2021, as “Earth Day.”

The COVID-19 pandemic created a new-found appreciation for those who have enjoyed our outdoor spaces. Our state parks and outdoor recreational spaces have been used to capacity this past year. We can’t afford to return to “business as usual.” Our natural spaces have provided a safe place for us to escape which is why we need to minimize deforestation, to help protect us from the perils of infectious diseases brought on by climate change. Restoring our Earth means improving and expanding these natural spaces. It means placing an economic value on our natural resources (our air, land, water, soil, trees)  and the services that they provide to us.

Earth Day events and activities are designed to promote environmentally friendly concepts, such as recycling, energy efficiency, utilizing environmentally friendly products, and reducing pollution.

Please join us in supporting this important resolution.
