| Subject: | Heart and Lung Act Expansion |
| I plan to reintroduce Senate Bill 439, which would expand the Enforcement Officer Disability Benefits Law (“Heart and Lung” Act) by including the following entities not currently protected under the Act: *PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Rangers, Ranger Supervisors, Ranger Operations Specialists and Ranger Trainees *PA Department of Corrections, Bureau of Investigations and Intelligence Commissioned Police Officers *PA Office of Inspector General’s Investigative staff *Fort Indiantown Gap Police *Allegheny County Port Authority Police *Allegheny County Housing Authority Police *County Probation Officers in participating Counties *Campus police officers employed by a participating university In addition, I am planning to include other transit police officers in participating agencies as well as other housing police officers in participating agencies. These two entities were not included in SB 439. It is important to note that the duties of all these individuals require them to serve the public and place themselves in harm’s way, and as such they deserve the same protections already afforded to other law enforcement officers. I hope you will join me in helping to protect additional members of law enforcement by signing onto this important piece of legislation. Last Session, SB 439 was sponsored by Senators Regan, Argall, Aument, Baker, Bartolotta, Blake, Brewster, Costa, Dinniman, Fontana, Iovino, Killion, Mastriano, Mensch, Muth, Stefano, Tartaglione, K. Ward, L. Williams, and Yudichak. This legislation was unanimously passed by the Senate. |
