Subject:	Observance of 9/11 in Schools

We intend to re-introduce the following legislation and invite you to join us as a co-sponsor: Observance of 9/11 in Schools. It is disheartening that there is no official observance of Sept. 11th in our state’s schools, and that the horrific events of this day – which will never be forgotten by Americans across the country – are not memorialized by Pennsylvania students. The vast majority of children currently attending our schools were not alive in 2001 when the worst terrorist attack on American soil occurred. Pennsylvania’s role should never be forgotten, evidenced by the sacred ground of Shanksville and the heroic sacrifices that transpired there. Our legislation will simply establish a moment of silence in our schools coinciding with the anniversary of Sept. 11th, in remembrance of the thousands of civilians and emergency responders who lost their lives – or were wounded – that day. The United States military continues to fight our enemies as an aftermath of that tragic event. Our bill will ensure that our pupils always remember and never forget about 9/11. Previously, the legislation was Senate Bill 869 of the 2019-2020 legislative session. It was co-sponsored by Senators Regan, Argall, Baker, Bartolotta, Brooks, Browne, Dinniman, Langerholc, Martin, Mensch, Phillips-Hill, Vogel, Judy Ward, Kim Ward and Yudichak.  The legislation received a unanimous vote from the Senate and advanced out of the House Education Committee, also with a unanimous vote.  Unfortunately, a floor vote in the House did not occur as the 2019-2020 legislative session concluded.
