MEMORANDUM

Posted: December 1, 2020 10:44 AM
From: Senator Daniel Laughlin
To: All Senate members
Subject: Update to Fire and Panic Act

In the near future, I plan to introduce a bill that would require the Department of Labor and Industry to update the Fire and Panic Act to include Family Daycare Facilities and require that smoke detectors be interconnected.

On Sunday, August 11, 2019, an early-morning fire at a daycare in Erie, PA, claimed the lives of five young children. This fire may not have been so deadly had the home been equipped with more smoke detectors.
Only one smoke detector was found in the home and it was located in the attic.
Deaths caused by fire can be prevented with the use of properly installed and managed smoke detectors. It is our responsibility to put the laws in place to try to avoid such tragedies as the one that recently occurred in my district.

Please join me in cosponsoring this important piece of legislation.

Introduced as SB563
