MEMORANDUM

From: Senator Thomas H. Killion
To: All Senate members
Subject: “World Stroke Day” in Pennsylvania Resolution (October 29, 2020)

Please join me in co-sponsoring a resolution designating October 29, 2020 as “World Stroke Day” in Pennsylvania.

Strokes are defined as the interruption of the blood supply to the brain and are the fifth leading cause of death and the leading cause of disability in the United States.  Killing approximately 140,000 Americans annually, someone in the U.S. suffers a stroke every forty seconds and one death attributed to a stroke occurs every four minutes.

Knowing the warning signs and symptoms of a stroke is important, as immediate medical care for a stroke improves the patient’s outcome.  Such signs include drooping of the face; sudden arm weakness; speech difficulty; vision problems; trouble walking; and a severe headache with no known cause.

Get Ahead of Stroke is a national public education and advocacy campaign focused on improving care and securing the best possible outcome for stroke patients.  Founded by the Society of NeuroInterventional Surgery (SNIS) in 2016, this campaign seeks to educate first responders across the nation and ensure that medical facilities are prepared to appropriately treat stroke patients, in order to save lives.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this important resolution.
