Subject: | Road Designation: Zachariah Walker |
I will soon introduce legislation to name Youngsburg Road-State Road 3043 in South Coatesville Borough, from the intersection of Modena Road to the southern border of South Coatesville Borough, the Zachariah Walker Memorial Road. This road goes past a Pennsylvania Historical and Museum sign, explaining that Walker, an African American steelworker, was burned to death by a mob on August 13, 1911. Nation-wide outrage led to the NAACP's national anti-lynching campaign and inspired Pennsylvania's 1923 anti-lynching law. The portion of this road includes the site of the church where the Coatesville Branch of the NAACP was founded. I hope you will join me in honor and respect for the memory of Zachariah Walker. |
