MEMORANDUM

Posted: September 18, 2020 12:13 PM
From: Senator Andrew E. Dinniman
To: All Senate members
Subject: Commemorating the 125th Anniversary of Frederick Douglass' last public lecture

I will soon introduce a resolution to commemorate the 125th Anniversary of the last public lecture given by Frederick Douglass.  This lecture was given at West Chester Normal School (WCNS) nineteen days before his death.

Douglass was a frequent guest in West Chester since his escape from slavery in 1838.  He had many friends in West Chester, including George Morris Philips, the principal of WCNS.  His speech dealt with the evils of lynching taking place in PA and the US.

Today West Chester University has a monument in tribute to Douglass and has created the Frederick Douglass Institute which is also present on other PASSHE campuses.  The purpose of the Institute is to create academic programs based on Douglass’ life and writings.

I hope you will support this resolution to celebrate the life and writing of Frederick Douglass by commemorating his last public lecture in 1895.
