Subject: | “Domestic Violence Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania (October 2020) |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution designating October 2020 as “Domestic Violence Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania. Reports show that on average, 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men have experienced severe physical violence by an intimate partner, more than 10 million individuals over the course of a year. In 2019, 111 victims died from domestic violence incidents statewide and more than 1600 people have died from domestic violence related events in Pennsylvania over the past 10 years. For over forty years, the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence’s 59 community-based domestic violence programs have been providing free and confidential services to nearly 90,000 victims and their children each year; providing shelter, legal assistance, counseling and children’s services while helping them find safety, obtain justice and rebuild their lives free of abuse. Their mission to end domestic violence is a goal we all share as we continue upon our efforts and to eliminate such staggering statistics in the Commonwealth. It is imperative that we recognize and work to prevent domestic violence, now more than ever, due to the uncertain and unprecedented times that we are collectively experiencing. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important resolution as we seek to support the victims and survivors of domestic violence in the Commonwealth. |
