MEMORANDUM

To: All Senate members
Subject: Pediatric Nurses Week – October 5 through 12, 2020

I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing the week of October 5 through 12, 2020 as “Pediatric Nurses Week” in Pennsylvania.

Home health agencies in Pennsylvania provide pediatric shift nursing to help children with complex medical needs live as independently as possible at home with their families. The key benefit of pediatric shift nursing care is that children can receive care outside of a hospital or facility and in their own homes with their families, regardless of the medical equipment necessary for their care.

Pediatric shift nurses are registered nurses and licensed practical nurses who are able to administer prescribed medication and ensure that a child’s condition remains stable. They are a lifeline to families who need the support and assistance so that parents can continue to work and siblings can continue to participate in school and community activities. Approximately 4,000 children throughout the Commonwealth are eligible to receive pediatric shift nursing in their homes where they can continue to live with their families

Pennsylvania is one of the few states where medical assistance is available to virtually all children with significant disabilities or medical needs. Caring for a child with complex medical needs is a great challenge to the parents and families who need and deserve to have supports in place. That’s why pediatric shift nursing is designed to offer the highest quality care to children, while easing the burden on parents and other family members.

In partnership with the Pennsylvania Homecare Association, I would like to recognize Pediatric Shift Nurses for their dedication and hard work by designating October 5-12 as Pediatric Nurses Week in Pennsylvania and ask that you join me in co-sponsoring this resolution.
