Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2019 - 2020 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: July 17, 2020 01:06 PM
From: Senator Thomas H. Killion
To: All Senate members
Subject: Honoring Pennsylvania native Billy “White Shoes” Johnson and Encouraging his Induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame

I intend to introduce a resolution honoring Billy “White Shoes” Johnson, a 9th Senatorial District native who graduated from Chichester High School in Boothwyn, was a running back at Widener College and went on to play in the National Football League (NFL) for fourteen seasons.

During the Superbowl LIV pre-game ceremony on February 2, 2020, Mr. Johnson was recognized as one of the NFL’s top 100 players of all-time, as part of the organization’s 100th Anniversary.  Mr. Johnson was also an All-American at Widener College; inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame; selected to the NFL Pro-Bowl three times; named All-Pro three times; and was a 2018 inductee of the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame, to name his most notable achievements.  In addition to his athletic accomplishments, he is also known as one of the first NFL players to celebrate a touchdown with a celebratory dance.

In spite of his accomplishments, Billy “White Shoes” Johnson is the only player honored in the NFL Top 100 players of all time (with the exception of those who have not met the five year time requirement since retirement) who is not a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

I intend to introduce a Senate resolution that would 1) honor Billy “White Shoes” Johnson for his athletic achievements, including his accomplishments as a return specialist in the NFL and 2) urge the NFL to induct him into their Hall of Fame in the next class of inductees.

Please join me in honoring this accomplished Pennsylvania native, while supporting him in attaining the recognition he deserves.
