MEMORANDUM

Posted: July 13, 2020 10:10 AM
From: Senator Bob Mensch
To: All Senate members
Subject: Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for Sanitation Workers

In the near future, I plan on introducing legislation which will consider sanitation workers as essential in terms of priority consideration for personal protective equipment (PPE).

Over the past several months, we have been working around the clock to assess the COVID-19 pandemic, and react accordingly to provide needed protections, funding, safety and clarity to all of our citizens – particularly those who are working on the front lines.

Throughout the pandemic, we have focused on funding, stockpiling and distribution of PPE for those most in need such as our health care workers and first responders, and rightfully so.  One sector that is being left out of the conversation are our sanitation workers who handle our trash and recycling day in and day out.  A dirty enough job as it is, these workers have been burning through self-funded PPE at a similar rate as our health care workers, yet have received no help from us.

As we continue to navigate these troubled waters, I think we can extend a helping hand to some workers who always tend to be out of sight and out of mind, yet provide a valuable and necessary service for all of us.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this important piece of legislation.
