| Subject: | CARES Act Funding – Nonprofit Assistance |
| In the near future, I plan on introducing legislation to appropriate $100,000,000 for grants to nonprofit organizations from money received by the Commonwealth from the CARES Act. Just like our small businesses have been hit hard, nonprofits across the Commonwealth are struggling financially in the wake of the ongoing pandemic. As families had to tighten their belts in the face of economic uncertainty and job losses, traditional avenues that nonprofits tap for support have dried up. Fundraisers have been cancelled, foundations have had to reduce funding in the face of increased demands, and government assistance has been compromised as budget deficits grow. The limited resources that nonprofits have had to rely on have only become harder to come by and access to funding has become more competitive. Pennsylvania and its economy rely on nonprofit organizations. From cultural organizations that educate our residents, enrich our lives, and drive tourism and neighborhood growth to social service organizations that connect families in need to resources, jobs, housing, and safety, nonprofits make our communities stable and our economy hum. It is the Commonwealth’s best interests to help nonprofits recover, so they can help our communities recover. Under this legislation, $100,000,000 of money in the COVID-19 restricted receipts account would be appropriated to the Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) for grants to 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations. The program would be run as a grant program through DCED with nonprofits applying for assistance with losses relating to COVID-19. Please join me in sponsoring this legislation. |
