MEMORANDUM

Posted: June 1, 2020 09:21 AM
From: Senator John DiSanto
To: All Senate members
Subject: Recognizing the 11th Anniversary of World Sickle Cell Awareness Day

I will soon introduce a resolution recognizing June 19th as the 11th anniversary of World Sickle Cell Awareness Day.

Eleven years ago, the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted a resolution to recognize sickle cell disease as a serious world health problem on June 19th of each year at the national and international levels.

Sickle cell disease occurs when hemoglobin, a protein carried by the body’s red blood cells that attaches to oxygen in the lungs and transports it throughout the body, is abnormal, causing the blood cells to take on a rigid sickle shape. Sickle cells can get stuck and block blood flow, causing pain and infections.

World Sickle Cell Awareness Day is important to help build support networks and strengthen our community’s collective resolve to care for those affected and their families and ultimately find a cure for the disease.

I hope you will join me in co-sponsoring this important resolution.

Introduced as SR332
