Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2019 - 2020 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 6, 2020 12:33 PM
From: Senator Scott E. Hutchinson
To: All Senate members
Subject: Apraxia Awareness

In the near future I plan to introduce a resolution raising awareness of Apraxia in Pennsylvania.

Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) is an uncommon speech disorder that affects a child’s ability to speak properly. When a child has Apraxia they have difficulty pronouncing words or sounds despite having an understanding of the language.

Childhood Apraxia of Speech has no definitive cause and no known cure. Parents with children who struggle with CAS often seek the help of speech therapists or use alternative communication methods to help their child manage and overcome this disorder. Early detection and intervention also have a significant impact on the speech development of a child with Apraxia.

Adoption of this resolution will give a voice to those who have been diagnosed with Apraxia. It will raise awareness and support for children living with Apraxia so that those children will be given the best opportunity to develop speech and succeed.

I hope that you will join me in co-sponsoring this crucial resolution.

If you have any questions regarding this resolution, please contact Nathan Akers in my office at
