Subject: | Expansion of Property Tax Exemption for 100% Disabled Veterans |
In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation to address shortcomings to the 100% disabled veteran’s property tax exemption. The purpose of this legislation is twofold. First, it will address the issue of many 100% disabled veterans who are ineligible for property tax exemption because of the way their income is calculated. These veterans—some of whom have the greatest need for property tax exemption—receive disability benefits designed to assist them in paying for everyday functioning, caregiving, medication management and renovations to their residence to accommodate their disability. Under current statute, these benefits are calculated as part of a disabled veteran’s income to determine eligibility for property tax exemption. This legislation will exclude federal veteran’s disability benefits from the calculation of “income.” Second, this bill will eliminate the wartime service requirement for property tax exemption. Regardless of when they served, those who have become 100% disabled due to their military service have made a great sacrifice and are deserving of this benefit. Please join me in honoring those who have sacrificed so much through their service of this great Nation and our Commonwealth. |
