MEMORANDUM

Posted: October 8, 2019 02:50 PM
From: Senator Doug Mastriano
To: All Senate members
Subject: Veterans' Designation on Drivers Licenses

In the near future, I intend to introduce the following legislation that would update Act 176 of 2012, and I invite you to join me as a co-sponsor:

Veterans’ Designation on Drivers Licenses.

A veterans’ designation for PA drivers licenses was enabled by Act 176 of 2012 (HB2428).

The enabling legislation dictates that the applicant must produce verification to prove their service and receive the American flag designation. This occurs via self-verification.

There is no formal verification during the application process. Instead, the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs validates the application, after the process has already been completed.

Our American heroes should not be subject to such bureaucratic red tape.

This is a time-consuming, costly and unnecessary exercise for the Dept. of Military & Veterans Affairs, whose mission is to serve our state’s 800,000 veterans; not-cross reference and validate PennDOT paperwork.

My legislation would eliminate the self-verification, and simply require the appropriate documentation whenever the veteran is applying for or renewing their license.

I hope you will join me in co-sponsoring this legislation. Please contact Scot Pitzer in my office with any questions at 717-787-4651.
