Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2019 - 2020 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: September 17, 2019 01:20 PM
From: Senator Thomas H. Killion
To: All Senate members
Subject: Recognizing the 375th Anniversary of William Penn’s Birth (October 24, 2019)

Please join me in co-sponsoring a resolution recognizing the 375th anniversary of the birth of William Penn on October 24, 1644 (October 14, 1644 by the Old Style calendar) in London, England.

As founder and proprietor of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, his Quaker principles served as the bedrock for the liberties and humanitarianism provided to the subjects of his colony. Penn had a strong faith in a representative form of government and believed in both public education and the respect of civil liberties for all people.

It is important for us to honor William Penn on October 24, 2019 not only for the Charter granted to him in 1681, establishing our Commonwealth, but also for his actions to both establish a General Assembly and frame a state constitution. His vision as a statesman has been lauded throughout history and he was later described by President Thomas Jefferson as “the greatest lawgiver the world has produced.”

On the occasion of this milestone anniversary of his birth, members of the Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) in cooperation with the City of Philadelphia will commemorate William Penn’s 375th birthday through an event planned for October 18, 2019 in the courtyard at City Hall.
