Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2019 - 2020 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: August 28, 2019 10:48 AM
From: Senator Pam Iovino
To: All Senate members
Subject: Resolution Designating September as “Preparedness Month”

In the near future, I will introduce a resolution designating September as “Preparedness Month” in Pennsylvania.

As Pennsylvanians, we have the benefit of experiencing four seasons, however with that comes unexpected weather events and varying degrees of natural disasters. Making a plan ahead of time for such events can significantly mitigate risks and adverse effects.

Data from the 2016 National Household survey shows that more than 75% of households have supplies stocked for disasters, indicating that Pennsylvanians understand the importance of being prepared. That same study, however, shows that less than 50% of households have an emergency plan for dealing with different types of disasters, a basic and necessary precaution. This indicates that greater education and awareness are needed to improve Pennsylvanians’ emergency readiness.

It takes education, communication, and community involvement to be prepared and achieve our goal of lessening the impact of disasters.

All of our districts across the Commonwealth have experienced significant and dangerous weather-related events that adversely impacted homes, businesses, and communities as a whole. Oftentimes, damage is limited and lives are saved due to proper planning and community preparedness. This resolution will remind Pennsylvanians that having a strategic plan before, during, and after an event can make a significant difference in the lives of all community members. The resolution will encourage Pennsylvanians to plan accordingly for all types of events, advancing our Commonwealth’s resiliency goals.

l hope you join me in support of this resolution.
