Subject: | Hunger and Food Waste in the Commonwealth |
Soon I will introduce legislation to direct the Joint State Government Commission to study Pennsylvania’s food waste problem, analyze potential solutions, and report their findings and recommendations to the Senate. An estimated 1.7 million Pennsylvanian’s experience food insecurity, while forty percent of all food produced is discarded and 10 million tons of food is left unharvested. Pennsylvania needs to enact food waste reduction strategies to combat this trend. For example, reducing food waste by fifteen percent could reduce food insecurity in Pennsylvania by fifty percent. This comprehensive study will build upon the Harvard Food Law and Policy Clinic’s published report entitled Moving Food Waste Forward: Policy Recommendations for Next Steps in Pennsylvania. The report’s recommendations will be analyzed to determine their feasibility. The study will also investigate other solutions and policy options available to policymakers. Please join me in supporting this important legislation. If you have questions about this legislation, please don’t hesitate to contact me. |
