MEMORANDUM

Posted: May 16, 2019 12:37 PM
From: Senator Thomas H. Killion
To: All Senate members
Subject: “Heatstroke Prevention Day” in Pennsylvania (July 31, 2019)

As we approach warmer weather, please join me in co-sponsoring a resolution designating July 31, 2019 as “Heatstroke Prevention Day” in Pennsylvania.

This reflects the same date as National Heatstroke Prevention Day.

Heatstroke is the leading cause of non-crash vehicle-related fatalities for children 14 and younger. Unfortunately, even great parents can forget a child in the back seat. Other risk factors include caregivers who aren’t used to driving kids or whose routine suddenly changes.

Heatstroke deaths have been recorded in every month of the year in nearly all 50 states, including Pennsylvania.

Last year, 52 children died of heatstroke nationwide and, as of today’s date, 7 children in the U.S. have died from heatstroke inside vehicles in 2019. Since 1995, there have been a total of 12 child vehicular heatstroke deaths in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

We can all help reduce the number of injuries and death caused by heatstroke by raising public awareness of the importance of preventing these senseless tragedies from occurring.
