Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2019 - 2020 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: May 9, 2019 03:54 PM
From: Senator Joseph B. Scarnati, III
To: All Senate members
Subject: Sale of the Lieutenant Governor's Residence

The residence allocated to the Lieutenant Governor is located at Fort Indiantown Gap in Lebanon County. The three-story, 2,400 square foot house was officially designated as the residence of the Lieutenant Governor in 1971 and was placed under the control of the Department of General Services (DGS).

Pennsylvania is the only state that offers a residence to the Lieutenant Governor. DGS has estimated that at full capacity, the cost to maintain the residence is upwards of $400,000 per year.

In light of Lieutenant Governor John Fetterman choosing not to live at the residence, I will be introducing legislation in the near future that would require the Department of General Services to sell the residence of the Lieutenant Governor. Proceeds from the sale of this property will be used to assist our military veterans in obtaining affordable housing.

While the residence has served as an asset for many decades, it is no longer a necessity of state government. Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation.

Introduced as SB750
