Subject: | Recognizing May 2019 as Childhood Trauma Awareness Month |
Please join me in recognizing May 2019 as Childhood Trauma Awareness Month. Over the past two decades, research has brought to light the vast scale and personal and societal consequences of childhood trauma. Almost half of all children in Pennsylvania have experienced adverse childhood experiences caused by poverty, abuse, neglect, and other high-stress conditions. These traumatizing events have permanent negative effects on a child's developing brain that can lead poor educational and behavioral outcomes and a lifetime of suffering. As a Commonwealth, we need to increase awareness of the effects of childhood trauma and the fact that it is so common in our communities. We need to recognize childhood trauma in our families, in our schools, and in our criminal justice system. Please join me in taking a step towards healing by designating this month as Childhood Trauma Awareness Month. |
