Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2019 - 2020 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: April 3, 2019 03:37 PM
From: Senator Judy Ward and Sen. Daniel Laughlin
To: All Senate members
Subject: Recognize April 14-20, 2019, as “National Osteopathic Medicine Week” in PA

We plan to introduce a resolution recognizing the week of April 14 through 20, 2019, as "National Osteopathic Medicine Week” in Pennsylvania.

There are currently 145,343 osteopathic physicians (DOs) and osteopathic medical students in the United States. Pennsylvania is the nation’s leader in osteopathic medicine with over 8,500 licensed DOs in the Commonwealth. One in four medical students in the United States attends an osteopathic medical school. Pennsylvania benefits from the education of osteopathic medical students at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine at Seton Hill and the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.

DOs have made tremendous contributions to the American health care system, including treating U.S. presidents and Olympic athletes, serving as Surgeon General of the U.S. Army, and sitting on nationwide health care panels. They have a strong tradition of ensuring patients in all parts of the country have access to health care, particularly in rural and medically underserved communities. DOs practice a hands-on, whole-body approach, which includes osteopathic manipulative medicine, to diagnose health problems, treat dysfunctions, preserve good health and prevent the spread of disease.

Pennsylvania’s osteopathic physicians are dedicated to improving the health of their community through education and awareness-based efforts, as well as by delivering quality health services. Therefore we encourage you to co-sponsor this resolution to recognize the week of April 14 through 20, 2019, as “National Osteopathic Medicine Week” in Pennsylvania as a way to increase awareness of osteopathic medicine and osteopathic physicians.
