Subject: | Protected Pedestrian Plazas and Pedalcycle Lanes |
In the near future, I will re-introduce legislation to protect pedestrian plazas and pedalcycle lanes. This bill was previously introduced as Senate Bill 788 of the 2017-2018 session. A companion bill sponsored by Rep. David Maloney, HB 1657 passed the House 187-0 during the 2017-18 session. Under current law, a vehicle shall park along a roadway within 12 inches of the curb. The Vehicle Code does not provide an allowance for parking next to bike lanes. My bill requires that vehicles parking along a curbside bike lane must park parallel with their right-hand or left-hand wheels within 12 inches of the outside line of the buffer area between the bike lane and parking in the direction of traffic flow. My office has worked with PennDOT and the City of Philadelphia to draft this bill. The Pedalcyle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee and the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia supports this bill. Please join me in sponsoring this piece of legislation. Thank you for your consideration. |
Introduced as SB565
